California’s HMO Guide

Is there a way to cut through legalese to help HMO members understand their benefits and rights? Health Research for Action was convinced that it was possible. Working with California’s Office of the Patient Advocate, HMOs, members, and consumer assistance groups, we developed a unique guide to help HMO members take charge of their health care.

California’s HMO Guide and its Spanish version, La Guía de los Planes de Salud HMO, include easy-to-read text, consistent design elements to increase readability and usability, and a comprehensive resource list with telephone numbers and websites where consumers can find information and help.

For the significant minority of Californians who speak neither English nor Spanish, Health Research for Action developed inserts in Arabic, Armenian, Cambodian, Chinese, Farsi, Hmong, Korean, Russian, Tagalog, and Vietnamese.
