Multilingual Communications

Will English-only publications reach your audience? Not in today's world. That's why Health Research for Action produces publications and materials in many languages, as well as alternative formats like Braille and audio.

Translation is only one part of a complex process. To provide easy-to-read, easy-to-use health resources we also address literacy levels, design, and cultural considerations. For example, finding the best way to explain concepts like "managed care" or "disability access" requires usability testing and other formative evaluation techniques. And we have found that for some topics and audiences, a bilingual format facilitates multigenerational use.

Our Medi-Cal guidebook for seniors and people with disabilities was first produced in English, Spanish, and Chinese after extensive formative research. Since then we have conducted focus groups and one-on-one usability testing to adapt it into Korean, Vietnamese, Armenian, Russian, Tagalog, Hmong, Farsi, Arabic, and Khmer.
